This is the ancient Azerbaijani city of Shusha. The foundation of the city was laid in 1752 by Karabakh Khan Panahali Khan. The city was occupied in 1992 during the first Karabakh war between Azerbaijan and Armenia. In 2020, it was liberated from occupation by the Azerbaijan Army.
As you can see from the pictures, the city has not been inhabited for 29 years, and the greenery has grown blindly. Houses were destroyed, ancient monuments were razed to the ground. The ancient streets of Shusha have been completely unrecognizable.
While walking in Shusha, we can say that the amazing beauty of the city is dizzying. Currently, the city is being restored by the state of Azerbaijan. Shusha is revived, roads are built, mines are cleared, destroyed residential buildings are rebuilt, historical monuments are restored. Foreign guests and journalists can now be seen in Shusha, which has been under occupation for 29 years, away from its inhabitants. Walking in Shusha, you feel like you are in 1992. Houses and belongings of many residents of Shusha, buildings of the 90s bring people back to the past.
Cıdır Duzu is considered the most sacred place of the city. The famous music festival "Khari Bulbul" was held in Cıdır Duzu. It has been 2 years since the Khary Bulbul festival is held again in Shusha.
Although security is ensured in the city, it is possible to see police and military personnel around often. This is because there are still Armenians in the surrounding villages of Shusha. Although peace is maintained with the participation of Russian peacekeepers, the ceasefire regime is often violated. Therefore, curfew is imposed in the city at night.
The city of Shusha is especially known for its large number of historical architectural monuments. In the neighborhoods of the city, ancient rare buildings still look magnificent despite the occupation and damage.
Mass departures to Shusha are currently not possible. The reason for this is the remains of mines and unidentified unexploded ammunition on the roadsides up to Shusha. There are daily bus flights to Shusha by the government and the people of Shusha, who were forced to move here 30 years ago, can see their homeland through these visits.
